Facts about the Chinese language
About 1.16 billion people across Asia and other regions speak Chinese (Mandarin) as their mother tongue.
At least five countries and territories—including mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong—use Chinese as one of their official languages. We primarily differentiate between Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
Mandarin Chinese uses four main tones (high level, rising, falling‑rising, and falling) plus a neutral tone—meaning that the same syllable pronounced with different tones can convey entirely different meanings (e.g., “mā” 妈 “mother” vs. “mǎ” 马 “horse”).
Chinese characters (汉字) are logograms: each character represents a word or a meaningful part of a word rather than a sound. There are over 50,000 characters recorded in dictionaries, though literacy in modern Chinese typically requires knowledge of around 3,000–4,000 commonly used characters.
Chinese boasts the world’s longest continuous written history, dating back over 3,000 years to the Shang dynasty’s oracle bone inscriptions (c. 1250 BCE). This unbroken literary tradition has deeply influenced neighboring cultures like Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.
“Chinese” encompasses a family of related but often mutually unintelligible varieties. The major groups include Mandarin (the largest, about 70% of speakers), Wu (e.g., Shanghainese), Yue (e.g., Cantonese), Min (e.g., Taiwanese Hokkien), Xiang, Hakka, and Gan.
