An apostille confirms the authenticity of the signature and, if applicable, the seal of the signatory as well as his or her authority to issue the document.
German documents are often only accepted if they have been legalised or provided with an apostille by the consulate of the country concerned. Governments confirm by apostilles that the documents on hand are genuine, i.e. issued by the government. The Hague Convention of 1961 regulates the cross-border certification procedure of official deeds and documents.
The issuing of apostilles depends on the document. Please contact the government of the issuing administrative district for the following documents:
- Identity cards, birth certificates, birth register excerpts
- Certificates of registration
- Residence confirmations
Documents from the judicial sector are provided with an apostille at the district court:
- Certificates of inheritance
- Divorce decrees
- Court judgements
- Notarial deeds
Apostilles can only be issued by governments or courts. Certifications, on the other hand, can be issued by publicly appointed and sworn translators and notaries.
Another distinction is the official certification: This can only be provided by authorities carrying a seal, e.g. mayors, city councils, authorities, courts, police or public churches.
