When is a sworn translator needed?

When deciding to move abroad, organising the most important things must be taken care of first. This also includes contacting various authorities. If the chosen destination country has a different official language, the essential documents must be translated into the target language. In general, courts, the authorities and universities as well as other public institutions require a sworn or certified, i.e. official, translation of your documents. This means that official documents, certificates – in other words, all the documents that are presented to authorities – must be translated by a sworn, certified or authorised translator.

Sworn, certified or authorised translator – what is the difference?

In common usage, the designations sworn, certified or authorised translator are used synonymously. These are only regional differences. Thus, in Germany, one encounters different official titles for this type of translator in the various federal states. In order to be allowed to use the title, a translator who fulfils all the obligatory professional requirements (in german only) in the respective federal state must take an oath. This is usually done at a Home Affairs department, a higher regional court or a district court. This oath is then recognised by all state and federal courts. This means that an authorised translator from Hamburg, for example, can also translate public documents for Berlin.

A sworn translator should be commissioned when certified translations are needed. A certified translation means that the translation of official or legal documents has been certified or confirmed. Certified translations receive their legal force through the signature of a publicly appointed and sworn or generally authorised translator, usually with a stamp and indication of the place and date. This means that a sworn translator vouches for a correct translation of the respective document with a stamp and signature. The authenticity of the translation is thus guaranteed in a legally binding manner. With lingoking, you have chosen a partner with numerous professional sworn translators to assist you with your certified translations. For every target language!
