Anyone who wants to drive a car, motorbike or moped on public property needs a driving licence. Together with our partner ADAC, we support our customers with their driving licence translations at their local ADAC offices.

The driving licence of citizens from non-EU countries loses its validity six months after registering a permanent residence in Germany. Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway, which don’t belong to the EU but to the European Economic Area, are exempt from this regulation. In order to continue driving a vehicle in Germany after this transitional period, a German driving licence is required. To that end, the driving license document needs to be translated into German. More than 21 million people trust the competence of the ADAC. Whether it’s about road safety, travel, technology, law or new developments in mobility, all of these people rely on the support of ADAC when they have problems on the road.

Most ADAC branches & travel agencies will translate and classify your foreign driving licence within a few working days.

Please also present your identity card, residence permit or visa. Alternatively, you can send us your documents by post. In this case, we need the original driving licence, a copy of your ID, your address and telephone number. Please come to an ADAC office near you with your original documents (no copies, scans, etc.). The translation, including classification, will take approx. 10 working days and will then be sent to you as a trackable DHL parcel.
